It is on them that I transfer my collection of films, which I previously had on DVD discs. At that time, HDDs were small in size, and there were no alternatives for cheap data storage. Everything seems to be fine, but there are times when it is not possible to copy a file from a DVD disc, it breaks off at 80 or 90 percent, what to do in such a situation and what can be done to extract any file.

We answer the question why the file cannot be copied. And this is how I tell my case, although I am sure that this happens to many people. You insert a CD or DVD, start copying files from it to your computer, in my case it’s Windows 8.1, I can’t really stomach 10. At some stage of copying the file I get the following error:

And the most annoying thing is that it was cut off at 95 percent, that is, most of the file is suitable for copying; below we will look at the typical reasons leading to this error.

Why can't I copy a file from a DVD?

Let's go over the reasons why you cannot copy the desired file:

• Your media was recorded crookedly, but this happens if you used a not entirely professional program, or it is not entirely compatible with the brand of your DVD disc
• A defective DVD disc, this is the problem with both expensive verbeiten-type discs and cheap ones without a name
• Physical damage to the media (scratches, chips, exposure to sunlight)

When you have a similar error and cannot copy a file, special utilities can help you out. In such situations, in 2010 I became acquainted with Dmitry Sergeev’s very simple and small Non-Stop Copy utility.

The utility is completely free and does not require installation, that is, the Portable version, but despite its modest size, it does a titanic job, and easily solves the problem of using optical media.

Launch Non-Stop Copy, you will need two actions, firstly, indicate the source file, what you need to extract and there are problems with this, secondly, indicate where to copy and click Start. The program will start copying the file, the successfully copied location will be displayed with a green mark, but there is no red mark, but in the end you will still pull out the file, but in a slightly damaged form, I think for video files this is not so critical, in my case it is an acceptable loss.

I will give a few more utilities that can copy a file from a scratched disk.

Unstoppable Copier utility

Also, the free Unstoppable Copier program will help you solve the problem when the disk cannot be read.

The utility itself is completely free. Installation should not be difficult for you; you just need to press forward a couple of times. We launch Unstoppable Copier, first of all, in the source field, through the Browse button, we indicate the file that needs to be copied from the disk or folder.

Then in the destination field, we also indicate through the review where to put it and click copy.

As soon as the process is launched, at the bottom of Unstoppable Copier, if it receives an error: it is not possible to copy the file, then this will be displayed in the Reading errors field; if it turns out that something useful is pulled out, then it will be displayed in the Copied damaged field.

One of the disadvantages of the utility is that it takes a long time to read damaged disk sectors, but unlike Non Stop Copy, it tries to restore them if possible

ANyReader utility

The error “cannot copy the file” can be fixed with cool paid programs, one of my favorites is ANyReader.

Unlike the previous utility, this one does everything very quickly, which is what you pay for. In principle, this set of software should be enough for you to get out of a situation where you cannot read the disk.

Sometimes, after long-term storage or mechanical damage, the disc is not copied to the computer. For example, I wanted to copy a movie, it seems to be copied, then it freezes in one place - probably on a scratch, and the window “Error when copying a file or folder” pops up.

Photo copying from damaged

If you copy a lot of photos from a disk, Windows will copy those on the disk up to the damaged section, and then you can skip a couple and copy the rest. I think if you don’t have a couple of photos from the entire disk, it’s not a problem, the main thing is to save the rest.

Copying games and data from a damaged disk

Here is the problem - if you had a game or program recorded on the disk, then if it lacks a damaged file, most likely it will not work. The solution is to search for this game or file again, you can try the method below, but the result is not known.

Copying movies from a damaged disk

Here there is a good chance to restore and copy the film. When you copy a movie, for example, 3.2 GB in size and almost at the very end it gives you “Error when copying a file or folder,” you get nervous - well, I won’t see a minute of the movie that is damaged on the disk, well, God bless him, I wish I could at least copy the rest of the film. After all, you can watch a movie directly from a damaged disk - there will be distortion in the damaged area or you can simply rewind it, but in Windows this option was not provided. The program is free and very easy to use, no installation required. Just run it and indicate which file you want to copy and where to copy it, click Start.

First, the program quickly copies undamaged areas, then copies bad sectors several times. If you are copying a film, then you don’t need to copy very carefully - skip a couple of frames and that’s it. The program will simply replace all bad sectors with zeros. By clicking Stop you stop detailed copying, but you must wait until the program finally generates the output file. That's all.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COPYING PROCESS

The process of copying a file is divided into 4 stages: quick copy,
detail, fine detail, copying bad sectors. Target

Upgrading a computer or laptop often involves replacing the hard drive with a larger capacity and faster one. Users are faced with the problem of transferring information from installed media to a new one, because in order to reinstall the system, drivers and necessary applications, they have to spend a lot of time.

In this situation, it is much easier to carry out full or partial cloning of an HDD or SSD using one of the specialized programs. Setting up and working with them does not require special knowledge, and the time spent on the cloning process is an order of magnitude less than on OS installation and configuration.

Copying a hard drive in Acronis True Image

One of the functions of this useful program is disk cloning, which, by the way, can be configured very finely depending on the tasks of a particular user. To avoid possible errors during the operation, you do not need to use Acronis True Image from a running OS - it is recommended to launch the application using a boot disk. Therefore, you will need an Acronis BootCD/DVD distribution, which will need to be unpacked onto a DVD or even onto a flash drive, for example, using the UltraISO, UNetbootin, etc. applications.

After creating bootable media, you can proceed directly to cloning:

1. Boot from the drive created using Acronis BootCD/DVD.
2. In the main Acronis window, open the Tools and Utilities section.

   

3. On the right in the list of utilities, go to “Disk cloning” and select the automatic process mode. Click Next.
4. Left-click on the source disk with the copied information, click “Next”.

   

5. In the next window, select the target disk to which you plan to clone the old HDD. The target drive can be either an HDD or a high-speed modern SSD.

   

If copying is done to a solid-state drive, then the usual situation will be when its capacity will be less than the connected HDD. In this case, Acronis True Image will display a message about the need to exclude some files and folders from the cloning process.

Typically, only the system is transferred to an SSD, so for precise copying you can select only the main partition of the disk (usually “C”), excluding partitions or individual files with unnecessary information from the process. If the disk capacity allows you to clone the old drive completely, you can click “Next”, after which the process of sector-by-sector low-level disk copying will start.

Note that the application is paid, but it is feature-rich, works very quickly and, as was shown, has the ability to select data on the hard drive for transfer.

Using Paragon Hard Disk Manager

This multifunctional application is only slightly inferior in popularity to the program described above. It is also convenient to use it for cloning information on drives:

Like Acronis True Image, it is better to run the application in question for reliable sector-by-sector data copying not from Windows, but from a boot drive. You can create it in the program itself, using a special rescue media creation wizard:

Note that Paragon Hard Disk Manager is also a paid application, but its functionality is no less than that of Acronis True Image. Both of them work with any disks and file systems, and support Windows 8.1 and 10.

Disk cloning using EASEUS Disk Copy

This small application, unlike those previously discussed, is completely free, but nevertheless allows you to reliably clone hard drives and individual partitions sector by sector and migrate the OS to various drives, including solid-state SSDs. The program is launched from a bootable DVD or flash drive, for which you need to download a free distribution kit for installation on the utility’s official website. After running the executable installation file, the wizard will offer a choice:

• install EASEUS Disk Copy on a USB flash drive,
• to an optical drive,
• Export the ISO image of the utility to your computer disk.

A simple and quick option is to create a bootable USB flash drive, i.e. the first one from the list.

In the next window, specify the disk to be copied and the drive to which the information will be transferred sector-by-sector. A certain disadvantage of the application is the lack of Russian localization.

After cloning a boot disk with Windows 10, sometimes the system may not boot. In this case:

If the File: \Boot\BCD error appears after booting, repair the Windows boot loader.

Cloning disks with Macrium Reflect utility

This is another small utility that is distributed free of charge. Its functionality includes cloning HDDs and SSDs, creating their full images, as well as images of individual partitions that can be used in the OS as virtual media. The installer can be obtained from application website, when launching it you need to specify the installation directory and select the “Free” license.

When you launch Macrium Reflect for the first time, it will prompt you to create a boot disk, which you should agree with, since cloning may be accompanied by errors when working in a Windows environment. After starting the program:

1. In the main window, select the disk to be cloned.
2. Under the selected drive, click on the “Clone this disk” link and in the next window, specify the drive to which you want to transfer the information.

Using Farstone RestoreIT Pro Utility

This paid application is used to create backups of any information on disks, saving the current state of the system, and in case of unexpected failures, restoring it literally by pressing a single button.

The way it works is that it overwrites the boot sector of the disk, adding itself to it, and also creates an additional logical disk for recording all the backed-up information. In fact, Farstone RestoreIT Pro creates system restore points, and it can be used to roll back not only the entire disk, but also individual partitions.

You can activate and deactivate the application in the context menu; the latter is opened by clicking on the tray icon. This feature allows you to save system resources when you are sure that its state does not change at the moment. Farstone RestoreIT Pro can create bootable CD/DVDs or even floppy disks, with which you can not only restore a disk if it cannot boot normally, but also the MBR master boot record with a partition table.
